Greenwashing; what is it? how does it work?

5 Sep

In a society increasingly aware of the environment, all companies are committing to the cause to a greater or lesser extent. Changing our consumption habits to move towards much more sustainable companies is in everyone’s hands.

At Selfpackaging we started the change some time ago, changing our habits as an eco-responsible company. You can see here our policy of sustainable materials with which we make our boxes.

Companies and small businesses are committed to working to reduce their carbon footprint. More and more users are showing interest in companies that show their commitment to sustainability.

What is greenwashing?

Greenwashing is a concept derived from the English term “Green” green and “washing” which means washing. A term that many companies use at a strategic level to show their customers that they are respectful and careful with the environment. Without this being real on most of the occasions.

How Greenwashing works, main trends

Greenwashing, also called green marketing, is a marketing strategy based on conveying to the audience the company’s or brand’s commitment to the environment. It is the strategy used by many companies to connect with a more environmentally responsible public.

The green color is not always related to changes in the company’s internal policy, so we must be very careful to understand whether the company is sustainable or not without falling into deception.

This is a strategy that attacks the subconscious of buyers by making them believe that the brand or company is eco friendly and environmentally friendly when in fact it does not have to be.

Selfpackaging and the environment

At Selfpackaging we made the decision some time ago to be more respectful with the ecosystem, working on it every day:

  • We believe in the circular economy: The goal of the circular economy is to produce goods and services while reducing consumption and waste of raw materials, water and energy sources. We design efficiently, to cause the minimum environmental impact with our waste. With our manufacturing processes we have managed to consume as little energy as possible. In addition, we take care of waste management to give a second life to the raw material.

  • We consume responsibly and locally: All our raw materials are recyclable. Many of these materials come from FSC controlled forests and are purchased from local suppliers. In this way, we promote local commerce and minimize our CO2 emissions. The paper in our products has been produced in a sustainable way, and with its purchase we contribute to the conservation of the forests. We also demand this commitment from our suppliers.

  • Waste management: Although we try to design and manufacture as efficiently and sustainably as possible, we generate 10% waste. Of course, these are managed by certified companies that collect, recycle and transform them so that they are returned to us as raw materials.

Now that you know a little more about Selfpackaging’s sustainable policy and the greenwashing trend on eco-friendly packaging and its benefits, get to work and make your next project more sustainable.
