Origin of donuts
The donut is a world-famous sweet that has become increasingly popular in recent years. Few people know that it was the Dutch who made it famous in the 16th century. Under the name of “olykoek” a doughnut made of dough and fried oil.
However, it was not until the 17th century that it crossed the pond to the USA, where two Englishmen began to call it “doughnuts” (nut paste), achieving great success among the population.
It was in 1847 that Hanson Gregory, a US Marine, gave this sweet its definitive shape by removing the inside of the sweet. He found it raw on the inside, so he decided to remove the central part and fry it again, resulting in the sweet as we know it today.
Developments throughout history
This great sweet has survived the different fashions and is one of the favourite sweet snacks. As early as the First World War, it was used to feed soldiers wounded in combat, and the legend and fame of doughnuts was fuelled and enhanced by large multinationals.
