UN OBJECTIVES

ONE OF THE BIGGEST ISSUES OF THE 21ST CENTURY

100% RECYCLABLE
CARDBOARD
WE BELIEVE IN THE
CIRCULAR ECONOMY
The objective of the circular economy is to produce goods and services while simultaneously reducing the consumption and waste of prime materials, water, and energy sources. At SelfPackaging, we insist on efficient designs that minimise waste and, therefore, the environmental impact of our production. We have tailored our manufacturing processes to consume as little energy as possible. And we take care of waste management by giving prime materials a second useful life.
WE CONSUME RESPONSIBLY AND LOCALLY All our prime materials are recyclable. Many of those materials come from FSC certified forests and are sourced from local suppliers. This means we can support local trade as well as minimise our CO2 emissions. The paper used in our products is produced sustainably, and by purchasing it, we contribute to the conservation of those forests. We also insist on the same commitment from our suppliers.
10% OF OUR PRIME MATERIALS BECOME WASTE
WASTE MANAGEMENT Although we try our best to design and manufacture as efficiently and sustainably as possible, 10% of our materials become waste. It goes without saying that this waste is managed by certified companies who collect, recycle, and transform it so that it returns to us as a prime material. By doing this, as we mentioned above, we create a circular economy. Cardboard is easy to recycle and uses a similar process to paper recycling. At home, when we separate and dispose of this type of waste in the blue recycling bins, it gets taken to recycling plants. Once at the plant, the waste is separated according to paper quality and stored in large bales to await treatment. Each bale of cardboard undergoes an industrialised shredding process. Water is then added to obtain a paper paste, which becomes the prime material for manufacturing new cardboard. As well as recycling cardboard you can also re-use it, giving a new lease of life to all those cardboard boxes lying around the house There are a thousand ways to find an alternative use for it!
+1000 FAMILIES INVOLVED
SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE At SelfPackaging, we contribute to both social and environmental initiatives, making donations so that it’s a little easier for them to continue their important work. We’ve also held several fund raisers to promote the causes of different charities: Fundación Aladina
Hospital Sant Joan de Deu
Fundación Ecomar
Fundación Pequeño Deseo

CONTINUALLY IMPROVING

OUR COMMITMENT MEANS WE ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO IMPROVE AND HELP THE ENVIRONMENT. FOR THIS REASON, OUR LATEST OBJECTIVES INCLUDE:

AWARENESS AND EDUCATION PROJECT. “PLASTIC IS A DESIGN FAULT”

We have committed to making monthly
“Reduce your waste” presentations in schools. At these workshops, we’ll give each child a box for their weekly waste.
We’ll then challenge the children to reduce their waste in line with the Zero Waste movement.
The objective is that their boxes take longer to fill each week

TREE PLANTING

We are planning a tree planting event to replenish the cardboard we consume in one year.
The planting will take place in 2021 and will be detailed on our social networks.
We’ll be relying on help from our whole team, but we’ll also be joined by some well-known faces to help promote the event more widely. As the well-known Chinese proverb says,
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now”.

ACTIVELY SOURCING NEW MATERIALS

We have eliminated plastic from the majority of our containers, as well as from shipment services.
We know that getting rid of a material like PET can be incredibly difficult in some cases,
but we’re investigating sustainable alternatives to replace it as soon as possible. Even so, more than
80% of our products are made from cardboard and are recyclable.

WATER-BASED INKS

We’re planning to use water-based inks for screen printing our customised boxes.
This method offers a superior quality print, as well as being odourless and environmentally friendly.
A SelfPackaging tip: in our blog, we also show you
how you can decorate boxes to give them a personal touch without printing.

Our business strategy puts a spotlight on the UN’s 2015 objectives.
Our commitment as a company is based on acting to change some of the primary social issues
faced by society today... The following targets have been chosen with the intention of meeting them during 2020.

And although we particularly identified with the need to address these first, we intend to deepen our resolve and continue
striving to meet other targets in the future:

POINT 5 GENDER EQUALITY

Target 5.5: Ensure women’s full and effective participation and equal
opportunities
for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life.

Target 5.b: Enhance the use of enabling technology, in particular
information
and communications technology, to promote the empowerment of women.
Currently, our workforce includes 30 women, which constitutes 90% of the company. Every
woman
has the necessary tools, technology, and knowledge to carry out her work,
whether computers, industrial machinery, or specialised design and manufacturing programmes.

POINT 11 SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES

Target 11.4: Strengthen efforts to protect and safeguard the
world’s cultural and natural heritage.

Target 11.b: Substantially increase the number of cities and human settlements adopting
and implementing integrated policies and plans towards inclusion,
resource efficiency, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, resilience
to disasters, and develop and implement disaster risk management at all levels.

We have made special efforts to reduce the amount of plastic in all shipping
packages and containers, and we are actively sourcing plastic substitutes for our products.

In 2020 we will make monthly visits to primary schools to promote a
sustainable and environmentally friendly way of life. The visits will cover subjects
such as re-using, recycling, and zero waste, to raise the children’s awareness
of these issues, and in the hope that they will grow up in a world where it’s
normal to be concerned about the well-being of others and our planet.

POINT 13 CLIMATE ACTION

Target 13.2: Integrate climate change measures into national policies,
strategies, and planning

Target 13.3: Improve education, awareness-raising, and human and
institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact
reduction and early warning.

POINT 8 DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

Target 8.6: Substantially reduce the proportion of youth not in employment,
education or training.

Target 8.8: Protect labour rights and promote safe and secure working
environments for all workers.

We offer young people and students paid employment as part of our
workforce. We provide a safe working environment both in our design studio
and our factory.

POINT 15 LIFE ON LAND

Target 15.1: Ensure the conservation, restoration, and sustainable
use of terrestrial ecosystems, in particular, forests.

Target 15.2: Promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types
of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase
afforestation and reforestation globally.
